Functional past = attractive features
Another Handhewn column seeing new life as the focal point in a new Media, WA home. This mantel was carefully selected for the features of mortised cut outs in its past use.
Mortising was a construction technique before the conveniences of our modern technology. It allowed for structural connections prior to the age of manufactured screws and nails. Interlocking members were inserted into place and then held in place with a wood dowel. it was a common means of building complex structure and replaced the stacking of wood log.
Today it serves as a reminder of our past in a very contemporary setting. The blend of colors from a century of supporting a past structure into the coloration in modern day natural stone veneers.
