A primary focus we have at RustiK Kreations is securing the proper wood destined for mantelpieces.
Over the past couple of decades with the introduction of gas fireplaces into contemporary and modern architecture, the mantelpiece has not been widely used. This trend has reversed and returning to fireplace construction with a mantel as a focal point in the Great Room, Master Bedroom and Living Room have introduced additional personality into the decorating process. We are even seeing mantels as focal points in kitchens.
I make special mention of securing wood for the purpose of mantle construction because, contrary to what many believe, all wood is not created equal.
- Wood species vary greatly and are unique in color, character, grain, and texture.
- Even within a specific species, wood can be vastly different. The placement of a knot or the sap content of a particular part of the wood can all come to bear when you are creating a unique mantelpiece.
- These characteristics are taken into consideration during the creation process and drawn attention to by the positioning above the fireplace opening.
All these factors should be considered when selecting a mantle. Any wood used for this purpose should be carefully processed and finished. Once in place, removal, adjustments or corrections will be very difficult. Temperatures around the area of the mantlepiece can vary from a comfortable 66 to 68 degrees up to 180 degrees within minutes.
At RustiK Kreations, we buy and process wood with these elements in mind. Depending on the species of wood, drying times will vary and in many cases, take years. Once dried, re-cutting and finishing take place. Our procedure carefully cuts out a mantel from that unique log and then we determine how best to use what is leftover. The entire process makes sure that little is left for waste.
Why should you purchase a mantel from RustiK Kreations?
Knowledge of the product involved and how it can be mounted and secured above your fireplace is a big part of the answer. As mentioned above, the space above a fireplace is a very harsh climate. This requires a very stable mantelpiece that is anchored and secured correctly. It is also essential that the product is dried and finished properly.
At RustiK Kreations, we provide assistance in layout, wood selection, and design. Please look through our album of finished project pictures below. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words so hopefully, the pictures will provide the assistance you might need. We would be happy to discuss your unique ideas and needs… to help turn them into reality.

I saw your amazing craftsmanship at the Mule and Elk Brewery on their flight holders. How did you carve the logo into the board? So precise!
Keep up the beautiful work!
